January is my favorite month as it holds up with many festivals on queue. One such festival is "pongal" which is celebrated all over India with various name.As India is a land of agriculture, hence this festival is grandly celebrated all over the country- mostly in the village's than in the cities.This festival is celebrated in order to thank and worship the sun god(Surya bhagavan) and rain god(indra bhagavn) for good and prosperous harvest for the previous year and for the upcoming year.

PONGAL(the harvest festival of the south Indian Tamil people). This festivals falls on the Tamil month called "Thai".It is a four day long festival.The first day is called bhogi, then comes pongal, mattu pongal and finally kanumu pongal.

"BHOGI:"
This marks the first day of pongal.On this day people clean and paint their homes. Later at night their burn of all the waste and unwanted things in the fire . In the village side people sing around the bonfire. It is believed that by burning the waste and unwanted things on this day beings in new and fresh beginning in the year.People decorate their homes and make beautiful rangoli's in front of the house(vasal). One important item that could be found in all houses is the sugarcane which is harvested the most.

With the sunrise comes the much awaited celebration-Pongal

Before the sunrise people take oil bath and make all necessary arrangement for the day's celebration.
Pongal is prepared with the newly harvested rice. The over flowing the water in the direction of the sun god marks the day's importance. Once the sweet is ready ,it is offered to the god and worshiped. Pongal is basically celebrated in the village more grandly than in the cities.Exchange of sweets that are prepared in each house are shared.
"MATTU PONGAL"
The day is celebrated to worship the cows and buffaloes which are used to help the farmers in their filds. The cows and buffaloes are cleaned and their horns are painted with various colors. Again on this day pongal(chakara pongal) is being prepared and offered to god. On this day, an important village sport is played called"jillikattu".The young people in and around the village chase the bulls to retrieve the money that is being tied in the horn of the bull.This is spot is more famous in Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and tanjavur.This festival is being observed for more than 500 years.
Finally comes the :
"KAANUM PONGAL"
"KAANUM PONGAL"
Kaanum pongal marks the finaly day of the four days of the pongal celebration. The word kannum means " to visit".On this day, people wish each other go around for a picnic with their family members.This day is also known as karinaal or thiruvalluvar day.
