Make a delightful khitcheree in just 30 mins


This is simple and yet very healthy food that could be made just in few mins using the broken rice or raava.This could be normal found as a breakfast dish in many south and north Indians house's .Also this dish could be either done by adding vegetables or without it. When added with vegetables it just look even more delightful and tasteful. So now lets start our "cook for yourself" dish!!


Preparation time:30 mins
Serve: 3

Ingredients Required:

  • 1 1/4 cups yellow split peas( or) split yellow mung beans,picked over,rinsed and drained.
  • 3/4 cup basmati rice
  • 1/4 cup ghee, butter or canola oil
  • 3 whole dried red chilies
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cumin seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 8 whole cloves 
  • 4 black pepper corns
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/8 teaspoon asafetida(optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 medium onions
  • 5 3/4 cups water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
Preparation procedure:
  • Combine the split peas or mung beam and rice in a bowl and cold water to cover,let soak 20 mins and drain it and keep it aside
  • Combine  the ghee, butter or oil, the red chilies, cumin seeds, bay leaves cloves,peppercorns,turmeric,asafetida(optional) and black pepper in a medium and cook it for 2 mins.
  • Add the onions and cook, stir until they begin to change the brownish and add salt.
  • Stir gently so as not to break the rice, about 1 min.
  • Add the water, salt and garam masala and stir gently to mix.
  • Bring to a boil , turn the heat down to low, cover and simmer very gently 20 mins and stir gently.Then continue cooking (covered) until the rice and lentils are tender and the mixture is still wet(like a very think and sarrory porridge )about 5 more mins.
  • Finally add little salt for taste.
Thus it is finally made , serve it hot with some spicy chutneys.!!!
